What Is Odd-Lot Trading? Taiwan Trading Hours, Orders and Practical Tips

Odd-lot trading lets you buy fewer shares than a standard lot. For common Taiwan stocks, one standard lot is typically 1,000 shares. You can use odd-lot trading for quantities such as 1, 10 or 100 shares. You still own the same company's stock; the main differences are trading units, hours and matching rules. A smaller investment does not turn the stock into a low-risk product. TWSE: Trading system

At NT$80 per share, a full lot costs NT$80,000 before fees, while 50 shares cost NT$4,000. Odd lots help you choose a share count that fits your budget. However, minimum commissions can take a larger percentage of frequent, very small trades.

Understanding transaction amounts, costs and risks also helps when considering other assets. ZONE Wallet provides crypto asset services, which are separate from Taiwan brokers' odd-lot trading services.

Check the Date: September 2026 Rules and the December Change

In September 2026, intraday odd-lot orders are accepted from 9:00 a.m., with the first match at 9:10 a.m. and subsequent call auctions every 5 seconds. The TWSE has announced that from December 7, 2026, order acceptance will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the first match at 9:00 a.m., together with an opening-delay mechanism. Intraday Versus After-Hours Odd-Lot Trading

The comparison below uses the rules effective in September 2026. Times are Taiwan local time. An order submits your instructions; matching pairs buying and selling interest under exchange rules.

Source: TWSE intraday and after-hours odd-lot rules. Price-stabilization measures can delay intraday matching, so a 5-second interval does not mean your order will execute every 5 seconds.

Intraday trading offers multiple opportunities to check execution. After-hours orders are matched in a single auction.

How to Buy Odd Lots in Five Steps

Step 1: Set a budget or share quantity

Suppose your budget is NT$5,000 and the stock is around NT$80 per share. Dividing 5,000 by 80 gives 62.5, but this Taiwan odd-lot system uses whole shares. You also need to allow for commission.

Buying 60 shares at NT$80 costs NT$4,800, leaving NT$200 for fees and possible price differences.

Broker apps commonly provide settings that make this easier, including specifying an intended amount and calculating the corresponding order quantity.

Step 2: Select intraday or after-hours odd-lot trading

Interface labels vary by broker. Check the trading category and quantity unit before submitting. Entering 60 should mean 60 shares, rather than 60 standard lots.

A broker may offer advance order scheduling. That is the broker's reservation service, not the exchange's matching time. Around the December rule change, check the broker's updated interface and the applicable official rules.

Step 3: Enter the quantity and limit price

A buy limit is the highest unit price you agree to pay; a sell limit is the lowest you agree to accept. A buy limit of NT$80 does not ensure execution at NT$80 or execution at all.

Odd lots and standard lots are matched separately, so their quotes and execution prices can differ. A standard-lot trade at NT$80 does not ensure an immediate odd-lot trade at that price.

Step 4: Check fees and settlement funds

Review the shares, price, estimated value and fees before submitting. Regular Taiwan settlement is the second business day after trading, or T+2. Brokers may require advance funding or earlier availability of cash; follow your account's instructions. TWSE: Investment guide

Step 5: Check execution reports, not just order acceptance

An accepted order means your instructions have been received. It can be fully filled, partially filled or unfilled.

If you order 60 shares and only 20 execute, record those 20 shares first and check the remaining 40. If you cancel, wait for the cancellation result. Resubmitting all 60 before checking the original order could exceed your intended budget.

Why Might an Odd-Lot Order Remain Unfilled?

Your buy limit may be below sellers' prices, other orders may have priority at the same price, or available shares may be insufficient. After-hours trading has only one match, and trading activity in standard lots does not ensure sufficient after-hours odd-lot supply.

First check for partial fills, then review quotes and order status. Decide whether to wait, cancel or submit a new order. Repeatedly raising your bid merely to obtain execution can take the purchase beyond your original valuation.

Under TWSE odd-lot rules, orders can be canceled or reduced in quantity but cannot be directly repriced. To change price, follow your broker's cancellation and resubmission process and confirm the old order has been canceled. TWSE: Odd-lot order rules

Odd-Lot Commissions: Check Minimum Charges First

Commission terms depend on the broker and account. Check each broker's website for your applicable conditions. TWSE: Commission rules

Assume an account charges 0.1% with a minimum commission of NT$5, before considering rounding:

Purchase valueCommission at 0.1%Charge after applying the assumed minimumPercentage of trade value
NT$500NT$0.5NT$51%
NT$5,000NT$5NT$50.1%

This shows how minimum charges increase the relative cost of very small trades. Also check how your broker handles multiple fills of one order, rebates and rounding.

Selling common stocks also incurs securities transaction tax. Trading a smaller quantity does not make the transaction tax-exempt. Calculate purchase and sale costs against their respective transaction amounts.

Consider the Risk of What You Own

Whether you hold 10 or 1,000 shares of a company, you are exposed to the same business and share-price changes. Fewer shares reduce the amount invested, not the percentage change per share.

A fall from NT$80 to NT$64 is a 20% decline for either quantity; the monetary loss differs. Buying small amounts of the same company each time still concentrates money in one investment.

Odd-Lot Trading FAQ

Do odd-lot shareholders receive dividends?

Eligible holders participate according to their share count. Cash dividends, stock dividends and amounts below one share are handled differently under company announcements. See dividend types and calculations.

Do unfilled intraday orders automatically become after-hours orders?

No. Unfilled intraday orders do not carry over. Recheck the price, shares and fees before placing a separate after-hours order.

Are odd lots always cheaper than standard lots?

No. The total amount can be smaller, but per-share prices, spreads and relative commission costs can differ.

Can I use market orders or margin financing?

The odd-lot trading described here uses day-valid limit orders and cash stock transactions. Margin buying, margin short selling and securities-lending sales are unavailable. TWSE: Intraday odd lots

Why do some guides say 9:10 and others 9:00?

The first match in September 2026 is at 9:10. The announced change moves it to 9:00 from December 7, 2026. Check the guide's update date and the rule's effective date.
