How Can You Pay With USDT? Benefits and 5 Common Payment Methods

USDT payment benefits and five common payment methods, with contactless card payment beside a blue shopping bag.

If you have USDT, you can do more than keep it on a trading platform or buy other cryptocurrencies. You can also use it to pay for goods, book accommodation, buy gift cards, or agree to settle service fees with a freelancer.

There are five common ways to pay with USDT: paying a merchant directly, checking out through a payment service, using a card that supports crypto assets, buying gift cards, and agreeing with the other party to settle by transfer.

Start by considering what you want to buy, then check which payment methods the recipient accepts. Some merchants accept USDT directly, some services first convert it into fiat currency, and others let you buy a voucher to use in a store. Understanding how the payment reaches the merchant makes it easier to compare costs and handle records and refunds later.

If you haven't obtained USDT yet, start with how to buy USDT. This article focuses on how you can use USDT after buying it.

What Are the Benefits of Paying With USDT?

Lower cross-border payment and collection costs

When you and an overseas merchant, freelancer or service provider can both use USDT, you can agree to transfer funds in the same currency and reduce high costs such as wire transfer and overseas transaction fees. You also don't need to wait several days for a bank wire to arrive, making near-instant cross-border payments and collections possible.

For example, on an overseas travel platform that supports stablecoin payments, such as Travala, you may be able to pay with USDT and save more on transaction costs.

On-chain transactions operate around the clock

Public blockchains operate 24 hours a day. For merchants receiving payments, funds can arrive faster than with traditional payment methods such as LINE Pay and JKO Pay.

For consumers, crypto credit cards are also starting to offer attractive rewards, making them an option worth trying.

Comparing 5 Common USDT Payment Methods

The methods below are grouped by the process you encounter when paying. A merchant may offer more than one method: for example, a website may accept wallet transfers and also integrate a payment service.

Method 1: Pay a Website or Merchant That Accepts USDT Directly

If a merchant already offers USDT as an option, select the currency at checkout and send the displayed amount using the network and address shown on the payment page. This method is suitable for people who already have USDT and are familiar with using a wallet or withdrawing from a platform.

For example, travel booking platform Travala offers USDT as an accommodation payment option. Choose your accommodation and room type, then check the cryptocurrency payment methods available for that booking. The booking platform handles payment and the reservation; the hotel where you stay may still settle with the platform in another currency.

Use the address and payment information generated for that specific order. If the payment page requires a specified amount of USDT, pay that amount in the specified asset and make sure the recipient will still receive the amount required by the order after any platform withdrawal fee.

For time-limited orders, also consider the trading platform's withdrawal processing time. If the payment deadline is approaching, ask the merchant whether it can be extended so that you don't have to resolve a late transfer to an old address.

Method 2: Pay at a Merchant's Checkout Through a Payment Service

Some stores accept USDT through a third-party payment service. At checkout, you can see the available currencies; the service then provides payment details, receives the funds and helps the merchant settle the payment.

For example, Shopify's official documentation lists Lunu, a third-party service that supports assets including USDT and offers fiat settlement. Whether a particular store offers USDT depends on its payment service, settings and applicable region.

You may also encounter payment services that use accounts on the same platform, payment codes or recipient identifiers. Whether these payments go through a public blockchain or incur network fees depends on how the service processes them. Check the total amount deducted, order status, and customer-service and refund options at checkout.

For consumers, a benefit of this method is that the payment can be linked directly to an order. When using a new store for the first time, enter the checkout page through its official website rather than sending funds to an address provided in a private message that is unrelated to the original order.

Method 3: Use a Crypto Debit or Credit Card Funded by USDT or Other Stablecoins

Some crypto debit or credit cards allow you to use assets such as USDT as the funding source. The assets are converted into fiat currency under the card's rules, and the payment is completed through the card network. You pay by card while the card service handles the asset conversion.

Issuing regions, currencies, eligibility and fee rules differ between services. This article does not present overseas card programs as recommendations that Taiwan residents are already eligible to apply for. Before using a card, check its official application page for Taiwan residency eligibility and then assess the available options.

When comparing cards, consider:

  • Funding order: Does the card deduct from a fiat balance first, or follow the crypto asset order you set?
  • Conversion: Are assets converted when you pay, or do you first convert them into a spending balance?
  • Total fees: Include crypto conversion, foreign transactions, ATM withdrawals and other charges.
  • Refunds: Check the refund currency and who bears exchange-rate changes.

If you only occasionally buy something with USDT, direct checkout or gift cards are usually easier to understand. If you want to spend it regularly, assess card eligibility and long-term costs.

Method 4: Buy Gift Cards, eSIMs or Stored-Value Products With USDT

When a brand you want to use doesn't directly offer USDT, check whether a suitable gift card or stored-value product is available. First buy the product from a platform using USDT, then redeem it with the specified brand under the product's rules.

For example, Bitrefill's Taiwan convenience-store gift card page lists products such as convenience-store gift cards, game top-ups and eSIMs, and its payment information also lists USDT. With a convenience-store gift card, you complete the purchase on Bitrefill and then use the product barcode at the specified store. The store receives the gift card rather than directly processing your USDT transfer.

Before buying, check three things. First, check the region: a US game top-up or store card, for example, may only work with an account registered in a particular region. Second, check the actual price, since the card's face value and the platform's selling price may differ. Third, review redemption and refund terms; some digital products offer less refund flexibility once a code has been delivered.

For your first attempt, consider a small product you know you can use. Complete the purchase and redemption process before deciding whether to use it for everyday payments.

Method 5: Agree to Settle Service Fees in USDT

If you and a designer, developer, translator or other service provider are both willing to use USDT, you can agree on a payment method in advance and settle through the specified address or platform account.

For example, if a design project was originally priced in US dollars, both parties can agree how much USDT to pay after delivery, which network to use and who pays the fees. If the quote is in New Taiwan dollars, also agree on the conversion time and reference exchange rate so both parties have the same basis for the payment amount.

Before paying, include the following in the order or contract:

  • The service, delivery date and payment terms.
  • The pricing currency and how the amount of USDT due is determined.
  • The receiving network, address or platform account.
  • How much the recipient should receive and who bears the relevant fees.
  • Contact details for cancellations, refunds or payment issues.

After payment, keep the TXID or platform transaction record together with invoices, receipts and delivery records. For business or cross-border operations, read stablecoin cross-border payments for more on the process and management considerations.

Check These Five Things Before Paying With USDT

1. Get the payment information from the official order. Obtain the address from the merchant's official website, app or a confirmed communication channel, and check the order number and amount.

2. Make sure both parties support the same asset and network. Distinguish USDT from USDC, and select Ethereum, TRON or Solana as required by the payment page. Address appearance is only an aid; check the full network name and official receiving information.

3. Confirm how much the recipient will actually receive. A platform may deduct its withdrawal fee from the amount you enter or charge it separately. Make sure the recipient receives the amount required by the order.

4. Check the payment deadline and crediting process. Platform withdrawal, on-chain confirmation and merchant order confirmation are separate stages. After sending, check the actual status.

5. Understand the refund rules first. Check the refund currency, address, amount, fees and processing time. After-sales handling of an on-chain payment generally depends on the merchant's and payment service's rules.
